Type Locality and Naming

The naming section at Guolang Village, Dashishao, 4 km northwest of Yunlong County, Yunnan. Named by the First Regional Party of Yunnan Province and Zhu Zhanxiang in 1973.


Lithology and Thickness

Grayish purple sandstone and purple mudstone, the base of which is alternating beds of purplish red, thick-bedded sandstone and calcareous mudstone. The thickness is 302–1620 m

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has a conformable contact with the underlying Paleogene Yunlong Fm or Paleogene Mengyejing Fm

Upper contact

No top of the formation is found.

Regional extent

The strata equivalent to the Guolang Fm are the Zhaojiadian Fm (in the Yuanmou-Chuxiong area).

Fossils

It contains abundant fossils, including the charophyte Gyrogona-Raskyaechara flora, the ostracod Pionocypris-Limnocythere assemblage, the gastropods Radix etc., the Estheria Paraleptestheria sp. and sporopollen.
